The Tooting, Balham & Furzedown Art Trail will be be appearing in your local cafes, shops and art venues this week as well as dropping through your letter box. This year’s art trail, part of Wandsworth Artists Open House, takes place on the first two weekends of October 1st & 2nd October and 8th & 9th October 2011.

We have a fabulous trail weaving through the streets of Furzedown, Balham and Tooting, featuring work from local artists, including paintings, prints, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, video, photographs and much more. The leaflet lists all of the artists and makers who are taking part, as well as details of drop in workshops, tea parties and a guided walk on the 9th.

We even have a competition, leave your contact details at each house you visit for a chance to win a meal for two at the Wheatsheaf Pub, Tooting Bec.

Look out for the orange and purple balloons or the Aspire Art Trail signs for participating artists and studios. A warm welcome awaits you at our homes ands studios where we look forward to telling you more about our work, and you might even walk home with some original art or at least a smile on your face and some homebaked cake.

Just Glass Showcase 6th July

Local fused glass artist Mandy Treptow is joining fellow artists to showcase new work and raise money for Save the Children.

Wednesday 6July 2011, 6.00pm to 9.00pm, 177 Westbourne Grove, London W11 2SB

For one night only, Mary’s Living & Giving Shop Supporting Save the Children will be hosting an evening with Just Glass, who will be showcasing the works of internationally acclaimed and emerging glass artists. The evening will be the only occasion in 2011when this collection of beautiful jewellery, stylish vessels and unique sculptures will be exhibited and available for purchase.

The ‘Just Glass at Mary’s Living & Giving’ event will take place on 6 July 2011 at Mary’s Living and Giving Shop supporting Save the Children on Westbourne Grove (6pm – 9pm). Work on show will include cast glass pieces by internationally renowned artist Angela Thwaites and the intricate gilding of Frances Federer. On the evening you will also have the opportunity to meet the artists firsthand, discuss the inspiration behind their collection, knowing that monies raised from your purchases will go towards saving a child’s life.

This event is being held in conjunction with Notting Hill’s First Wednesdays, with a percentage of funds raised on the evening going towards Save the Children’s, ‘No Child Born Without a Chance’ campaign.

Eight million children die every year from easily preventable causes, such as pneumonia or diarrhoea. Save the Children’s ‘No Child Born to Die campaign, calls for vaccinations to be made available for the world’s poorest children – a move which could save a quarter of these children from dying. The campaign is being backed by a range of celebrities, including Alexandra Burke, Helena Bonham Carter and Natasha Kaplinsky.

Glittering shards at Sprout

I close my eyes at night and see tiles dancing. It feels as though every waking moment not devoted to my children is currently devoted to making mosaic art for my forthcoming exhibition. And to this, I would like to warmly invite you! If you live far, far away, I will be having an online version of the exhibition too – details below!

I have taken part in lots of group exhibitions over the last 5 years but this is the moment when I have chosen to fill the walls of an entire gallery with the work of my hands, my head and my heart (to paraphrase St Francis of Assisi). I am hugely excited, quite overwhelmed (and a teensy bit nervous…).

The exhibition will contain wall art, jewelery, some 3-d work, decorative gifts and lots of hanging glittery things (well, it will be nearly Christmas…!). So, a perfect start to the festive season. My penchant for writing will also be sneaking into the exhibition, with poetry and prose alongside the art. I hope it will be a feast of beautiful things for the eye, provocation and amusement for the mind and some soothing and connection for the soul.

There is also a ‘special guest’ at the exhibition. I have been working alongside the wonderful volunteers, young people and parents from the Klevis Kola Foundation which supports refugees. This team effort has resulted in over 40 mosaics that will be displayed, on the theme of hope. Many of the Klevis Kola gang will be at the Start of Show Party on 3rd December for you to meet. And there will be a raffle, with special prizes, to raise money for the work of Klevis Kola. Several of the mums will kindly be making yummy international food for you to eat on the 3rd as you browse and mingle! So, here are the details:

Where: Sprout Community Arts, 74 Moyser Road, Tooting, SW16 6SQ (nearest tube Tooting Broadway then bus 57 or 333 to top of Moyser Road).

When: the exhibition runs Tues 30th Nov – Sat 11th December (when there will also be a morning mosaic taster workshop that you can book onto) and is open Tues – Sat, 10am – 5pm. I will be there a lot (but not all) the time so do call if you are coming especially as I would not want to miss your visit!

Start of Show Viewing: Friday 3rd December, 6-9pm, to which you are warmly invited (feel free to bring friends). Come, browse, chat, munch international snacks and you may even win a prize!

I will be doing an online version on the exhibition on Sunday 12th December here on the blog. You will be able to see the art, read the prose, sign the visitors book and if anything grabs you, see a list of what work is still available to buy! Sorry that I can’t send party food down the optic fibres though…

Textile workshop

As part of our show at Sprout we held a textile design and printing workshop. We spent a lovely evening looking at vintage textiles and mid-century designers before designing and carving our own blocks. We used softcut blocks instead of lino as this is easier to cut and safer to use with children.

I had spent a while researching fabric inks that would work with softcut and transfer well to fabric. I had come across Permaset inks and wanted to try these as they are water based and non-toxic. They are intended for screen printing rather than relief or block prints, so I was worried they would not be sticky enough, but the nice people at Colormaker in Australia who manufacture Permaset inks very kindly gave me some advice and suggested using a sponge roller. Before the workshop I dug out one of my old lino blocks, this one is based on a textile workshop at the Geffrye Museum. And I’m pleased to say the Permaset inks worked a treat.

Next week we will print our lino blocks and then make our fabric up into something fancy for the home, a cushion, a tea cosy or a bag!

Earlier in the week we had a special session of our ceramic painting workshop at Sprout for making little hand and foot prints. Local illustrator Caragh Buxton gently took prints of babies and toddlers onto ceramic cups, plates, tiles and even xmas baubles. She then adds dedications and decorations and fires them at her studio. We will repeating this again at Sprout on Saturday and Monday.
